PreK - Kindergarten
Two mixed-age pre-school/kindergarten classrooms provide a safe, secure environment for children just beginning to learn how to play with others. In these classrooms, imaginative play, stories, crafts and wholesome snacks provide a comfortable rhythm for the young child. A seasons table, decorated with treasures from nature, helps mark the cycles of nature.
Here the important work of childhood takes place. Children play and imitate and imagine - all the activities that strengthen their inner selves and prepare them for the academic work they will encounter in first grade. Their playthings are mostly unformed - river rocks, pine cones, logs and stumps, planks of cedar and pine, soft dolls of cotton and wool, play stands and silk scarves.
A gentle transition from home to school, the pre-school/kindergarten day provides:
- baking and cooking activities
- stories and puppet plays
- recitation and singing
- watercolor, crayoning, beeswax modeling, nature crafts
- nutritious snack
- circle activity
Children ages three and one-half through six play together in the family-like classroom. The younger children learn by example from the older children how to work and play together. As they grow, they become natural leaders and helpers.
Families may choose to enroll their children for one-half day or a full day two, three or five days per week.
